Den Father.

As the sun grew hotter each day, anticipation welled within Roe's stomach. Summer was in full swing and soon Blackfoot would make the announcement of his promotion. Then, things would be official. It was exhilarating; being responsible, having worth. Doing a duty to a pack he loved. A pack he called home.

Yet he was scared.

Would the Astarian's accept him as a high ranking wolf? He would stand beside Dove and give orders to the other Caretakers...never in a million moons did he imagine himself being the one to make the commands. To lead. And to think; just a few seasons ago he was a young, scared boy. Fragile and broken. Now, he stood tall and healthy and on the verge of coming into his prime. He had grown so much since starting out in Astaria, he could only thank Blackfoot and his comrades endlessly for their acceptance and support.

Golden brows furrowed as he neared the borders of The Pine Forest. It had taken him a while to get here. But this was a trip he wanted to do. Needed to do. His stock pile was withering, dying, decaying. Yes, his stockpile now. Awkward golden paws stumbled over what was Idrani territory to find nothing but mixed scents. His heart sank just for a moment to think that Idrani had to seek sanctuary within Astaria... how horrible it must feel to depend on another pack. Shaking away those thoughts of sympathy; his nostrils flared. At least now he had more company than just Arios and occasional Sif! Mordecai was a friend he was eager to see again, it was nice to hang around someone his own age...

Grabbing a large dock leaf tenderly within his golden jaws, Monroe set off upon his quest to gather fresh herbs. And perhaps some more pretty flowers for his den.

It was strange being within the Vista. There weren't any strawberries there... and it was all too easy to see Cheiren and Adair together. He was happy for his friend but also couldn't shake that feeling of jealousy within him. It was why he couldn't be within the Vista right now. He'd left after a guard shift at the tunnel to go back to the Pine Forest and find that strawberry patch that he loved so much. It would make him feel better to indulge in those sweet fruits.

--

He'd been there for a while, munching on berries and growing steadily more full from it. His fur, he didn't much care about and had allowed red strawberry stains to plague it while he ate. At the end of his meal he looked less like a brown wolf and more like a brown wolf with red patches all over... red sticky patches.

Still, the berries had made him feel just a bit better and he was ready to go back to the Vista and slink into his den.

Or maybe he should find Monroe. It would be nice to have someone to talk to and the snarky golden boy was good at making him laugh. Hmm...

Perhaps it was his thoughts that brought up the man but soon enough he could scent the floral aroma of the healer. His heartbeat quickened and the dejected way that he'd began to head back to the Vista perked up. His nubby tail gave a few wags as he followed the scent until he found the man. "Hey, Monroe! Collectin' herbs and stuff?" His voice was friendly and warm, as were those half-lidded brown eyes as he looked down at the smaller man. Happy to have someone to talk to and take his mind off of things.

Tenderly, did golden jaws clasp at the root of an aloe-vera plant, the sticky sweet substance stinging his tongue. Slowly, he picked up some large leaves and placed it upon his make-shift basket. Nostrils flared as he gingerly nosed about the brush to find some chamomile, yes... it would be a herb mixed with fresh lavender to soothe his nerves come the day of the announcement. The Den Father put a few extra flowers together, just in case.

The sun reigned down upon him, patches though the Pine's making his dark, golden fur shine like the sun. A small humm passed through his jaws as Monroe continued on his work, grabbing some cotton root bark. Some Lavender and Ginseng. This was where he was at his most happiest; simply foraging for herbs and enjoying the warm sun. Nothing could beat it...

"Hey, Monroe! Collectin' herbs and stuff?" A familiar voice called out to him and quickly, the golden male rose his head. "Mordecai! U-uh yeah, just... doing my job." A nervous chuckle rumbled from his jaws as he gazed upon his friend. Golden head tilted to the side as he noted patches of red. His heart quickened, yet as his dark nose flared; he detected hints of berries. He stepped forwards and saw glints of seeds and berry stains clumping his fur. Suddenly, he felt a flush of warmth spread over his features. He probably looked terrified, or crazy; rushing towards Mordecai like that. "S-sorry," He began, his gaze breaking away from the soft, caramel pools of his friend. "Heh... uh, f-for a moment I thought those stains were blood." Always so quick to react and panic... rather than logically thinking it through. Golden ears slanted backwards towards his skull.

The golden head of the Den Father rose so that he could be appraised with purple orbs. There was some note of worry there that had Mordecai tilting his own head to the side curiously. What was the matter? He couldn't scent anything to be worried about on the wind and a quick look around let him know that there was nothing to be afraid of. His quizzical gaze returned to Monroe as the younger male apologized. He wagged his tail to let the other know that "it was alright".

The other explained what had had him so spooked and Mordecai gave a soft "ooohhh" of recognition. "Naaaahhh, just strawberry stains. Nothin' to be worried about." Although he probably already knew that which had triggered the apology. There was no need for one though, Mordecai just found it amusing that the other was so concerned for his wellbeing. Was that part of his job as "Den Father" or was that just because they were friends? Hmm... "Unless you wanted some strawberries... I might have eaten'em all." Whoops... He gave an apologetic, lopsided grin that paired perfectly with his half-lidded gaze. The brown wolf was the absolute picture of a carefree soul.

If only he felt that way on the inside instead of having that twinge of jealousy. Maybe a walk with Monroe was just what he needed. His friend was already making him feel a bit better with his concern and even just this brief flash of company.

"You mind if I come with you and look for herbs? I ain't got nothin' else to do, right now, an' it'd be fun wandering around with you!" And maybe he'd find something else to munch on. He was still pretty hungry.

"speech."
