One might think he would have chosen a den of darkness for his own, but he chose a spot close to the ocean where light filtered in through the cracks every morning.

He could hear the ocean, though it was considerably deafened due to the wall of stone between them. He could hear gulls and as he lifted his head wearily, stuck momentarily between his dreams and being awake, he felt like he could almost feel the spray of the ocean. As his heavy lids worked themselves open he yawned. His gaze settled on the golden figure several feet away and he blinked, as if forgetting who now shared his den with him. He had never allowed a woman in his den for any purpose other than one and yet she had been here and not allowed anything to happen.

Lachlan almost rolled his eyes, but he was still too tired to care much about any of that right now. He began to stir, shifting and itching his lower back with his sharp teeth. Maybe he should go down to the ocean, a nice dip might wake him up. He didn't know why he felt so groggy. It wasn't like he'd been up doing anything he normally did. A snort escaped him and he sat up, scratching his neck with a hind leg next. Maybe that was what was wrong. He was slacking on his usual activities... but he didn't fucking feel like doing anything, especially with everyone bothering him. He just wanted to find the scum that killed his brother and get her out of his god damn hair.

She was just a reminder of what Galadriel had that he did not. She was just someone who had rejected him and for some reason he felt the need to respect that decision, for now. With another huff, he rose to his paws and shook out his coat before heading towards his den's exit. There was a small tunnel to the ocean where he could enjoy some time alone.

honeysuckle
for your pleasant dreams.
The night had passed by slowly, she realises when she hears Lachlan stir from across the den. Eyelids heavy and body unresponsive, she feels awful. Fading in and out like the waves that crashed continuously beyond the caves, she can hardly tell how long she had actually been asleep. She remembers hearing Lachlan settle near her, feeling slight fear as if he might have tried to take advantage. But as evident from their peaceful slumber, nothing of the sort had occurred. Curling her head inwards towards her chest, she feels somewhat glad, thankful even that he had kept the truce between them. Who knows, she thinks paltrily, perhaps he had been too tired to do anything last night.

Lachlan leaves, heading out of the den to do...whatever and her ears flicker, listening out for his footsteps. Once sure that he is a few lengths away, she rolls onto her side. Her eyes blink blearily at the blank wall, suddenly disoriented about her position in the den. Facing the back of the dwelling, she frowns slightly, wondering just where she had passed out. Everything looks the same in the den, save for the scattered rays of light that shine through cracks in the rock. Yawning, she curls into a ball, hoping to generate more warmth as she buries her snout into her fur. She did not feel like getting up.

Despite her wishes to fall asleep, it's mere minutes when she realises that she is acutely aware of everything around her from the drips of water to the slight howl of the wind as it swirls outside. Grimacing, she realises with some dejection that sleep will not return to her. She groans when she returns onto her belly, head barely kept up as it sways back and forth. Her hind-legs arch upwards as she pushes her front down in a slow stretch, hearing her muscles and bones realign themselves, humming in the process. It makes her feel boneless, wobbly but with a grunt, she pushes herself to her feet.

Shaking her fur of any debris and dust, she smacks her lips, feeling dry in her mouth. Are there any waterholes? she wonders as she looks around the empty den. Strolling from one side to the other, there's nothing special to note, except for it being saturated in Lachlan's scent with slight hints of her own. Two openings are carved into the walls; one leading to the rest of Cyrileth and the other towards the ocean, she presumes.

She walks over to the ocean path, smelling Lachlan's recent presence as he passed through. The light of the morning easily reaches the mouth of the cave, illuminating the stone floor. The scents of salt and algae assaulting her nose, she edges closer to the mouth, eyes transfixed upon the blue sea ahead. How long had it been since she had last seen the beach in such clear weather?

The ground slowly becomes gravelly when sand blows inwards and she stops a few steps outside. With no real intention to go any further, she looks around for Lachlan, wondering if he would be nearby. Where did he go?

( Why does she care? He can go wherever he likes. )

With no sight of the Ó Conaill male, she turns tail and returns into the den. When he comes back, she will ask where the fresh water is...and maybe if he had anything to eat.

Lachlan had decided against getting wet this morning, thinking that it would be more of a pain to dry his coat... so he had just sat there and stared at the waves for a while before deciding to head back. At least the constant sound of the waves and the birds had kept him distracted for a little while.

As he slipped back into the darkness, he spotted Anaïs, who was finally up and about. His ears flicked as he came close, but not too close for comfort.

"Finally decided to get up?" he asked. He wondered how long she had been up and why she'd chosen to remain here. The decision to stay still perplexed him, and he wasn't quite sure why he even allowed it to be honest. She didn't belong here, that much was obvious. Lachlan still had nothing to give her, there were no leads on his brother's death and he didn't even know where to begin. His searches were aimless, and always fruitless. He knew should just chase her away and tell her he didn't want to see her face ever again, but he didn't. Maybe because that wasn't what he really wanted to do...

honeysuckle
for your pleasant dreams.
Her stomach grumbles as she paces around the den, sniffing curiously at its walls and interior. Spacious and large, it takes a few seconds of pacing to reach one end to the other, its ceiling far above with minimal stalactites. Layered with Lachlan's scent (and perhaps a faint sliver of her own), she can tell it is still in the works of becoming a home. It is rather empty, however, Anaïs muses as she examines the bleak stone. She imagines it would become quite lonely with only the sea breeze as a constant visitor.

She doesn't hear Lachlan return, startling when his voice appears behind her. Head whipping around, she regards with him with briefly widened eyes before settling to a cool gaze. "Finally decided to get up?" he says, voice neutral and carrying none of the impertinence he usually has during later times of the day. Hearing him like this doesn't rile up any irritation in her belly, a notion she finds pleasant, if not surprising. Before she can help it, a small smile curls instinctively upon her lips, the expression fleeting as it rises and falls within a breath.

Nodding, her eyes shift away from him as she feels the awkwardness beginning to build, set up by the ensuing silence. They are hardly friends, connected only by a tumultuous history and a single person. And yet they share a dwelling, sleeping in the same quarters as if—

She scoffs internally. She wouldn't be here if he hadn't promised; out of all the places she could be in Cyrileth, the caves are the last. It is out of convenience that she stays, choosing to keep close so that he keeps his oath. Convenience and nothing else.

Not because you're afraid of being alo- She squashes the ugly little voice that had spoken and sucks in a sharp breath. Absolutely not.

Eyes flickering to Lachlan again, she offers that brief smile once more but the warmth doesn't appear again in her chest. She has no desire to pledge to him like those that prowl the rest of the tunnels. By remaining with him, she shall take advantage of the protection he provides.

"Good morning," she utters, voice crackling from the hours of sleep (or lack thereof). Clearing her throat, she mumbles disjointedly, "Did you. Sleep well?"

As they looked at each other, Lachlan wondered what might be going through her might. He didn't often care about these sorts of things, but found himself wondering them often about her. She was so different from the usual company he kept and he found himself breaking a lot of his own rules to keep her here. Her gentle greeting caused his ears to flick and her question lifted his eyebrows curiously. "Do you really care?" he asked. Nobody every asked him stuff like that... so he couldn't be sure she wasn't just talking for the sake of it. "I mean, yeah sure... I guess," he murmured uncertainly.

He felt a strange feeling overcome him and he shook his head. "Uh, do you want... anything?" he asked. "Are you hungry" He didn't really know what to say, what to ask. He never really cared for another wolf before. He was incredibly self-serving and had never been relied upon for anything by anyone. It wasn't like she really relied on him, but still. He shook his head again and sighed, at a loss for words yet again. What was it about her that made him feel so weird and completely out of his element. It was downright annoying most of the time.
