she acts like summer and walks like rain

Ianthe's ears twitched as a strident howl rent the evening's silence. Her head rose, her ears pressed forward, and her gaze took on a decidedly poignant air as her mind worked to identify the source of the half-remembered voice. Integra, the data swiftly denoted. The knowledge prompted the formation of a faint, unfamiliar smile on the woman's robotic features. Ianthe sprang to her feet, turning unerringly towards the origin of her sister's song. It had been too long - five months, three weeks, and thirteen days, to be precise - since she'd last caught hint of Integra's scent, and longer still since they had all been together as a family. She could not pretend to uncaring impassivity when Adair had informed her that he'd finally reunited with Integra after weeks of combined searching; her computerized heart had swelled with relief and happiness, and she'd been riding that high ever since.

Whether it was the will of the God and Goddess, or whether it was simply the irrevocable march of inevitability, Ianthe would not deny her relief at knowing Integra was safe and unharmed. Thereafter resigned to return to Asteria and simply wait for her littermate's homecoming, she had busied herself in various projects. Nominally ranked as a hunter for the pack, she had thrown herself into the study of migration patterns and herd tactics - but she was more than willing to abandon the pursuit in favor of confirming Integra's wellbeing. It had been vexing to search for so long, and come up empty-handed, all queries left dry and bare. Now, with all efforts borne to fruition, she could think only of making sure her sister was hale and healthy - and that she had no intention of disappearing again.

Ianthe navigated the caves with long-studied ease, her pace sure and swift. Adair had beat her, but not by very long; she heard his voice even as she approached. Ianthe stepped up beside her elder brother, brushing her muzzle across the top of Integra's. "Sister," Ianthe offered, her mechanic voice tinged with the hint of warmth reserved solely for her family. After that, however, she was at a loss. Warmth was not her strong suit, comfort and empathy far beyond her. Would it be better to remain silent? Would additional inquiry make her seem uncaring? She had nearly undermined Adair and Cailan's reunion; she would not chase Integra away with a repeat of the same mistake. "We were worried," she settled for at last, a matter-of-fact expression of truth that had an undercurrent of feeling. She stepped back, and her eyes scanned over Integra's form, searching for injuries, for details that might illuminate her health.

she listens like spring and talks like june

[32] But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing of a pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?

[33] On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammeled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.

“Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita. Did she have a precursor? She did, indeed she did. In point of fact, there might have been no Lolita at all had I not loved, one summer, an initial girl-child. In a princedom by the sea. Oh when? About as many years before Lolita was born as my age was that summer. You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, exhibit number one is what the seraphs, the misinformed, simple, noble-winged seraphs, envied. Look at this tangle of thorns.”
